A Walk Through Matanzas
Founded on October 12, 1693 by some thirty families coming from the Canary Islands off Spain, Matanzas, known since the 19th Century as the Athens of Cuba, invites all visitors to take a look at its poetry filled streets.
1. Since Matanzas is also known in Cuba as the City of Bridges, what better place to start than at the Calixto García Bridge crossing the San Juan River.
2. Once at the Plaza de la Vigía, you will be at the exact location where the city was founded three centuries ago. Around you are important buildings like the Provincial Court of Justice and the Junco Palace Museum. Have a quick snack at the La Vigía Inn which specializes in sandwiches and beer.
