Photofeature Pedro Abascal

Well known Cuban contemporary photographer, Pedro Abascal is a self-taught artist of the lens who has been working as a professional for almost two decades. With a unique sense of observation and keen sensitivity, Abascal goes beyond the merely anecdotal and descriptive features of photography and bestows a vast symbolic meaning to pieces of great beauty and expressive force with a distinctive personal seal.

His work has been published in several national and international anthologies of photography and visual arts, such as Song to Reality, Anthology of Latin American Photography 1860-1993, Project Memory, Viva La Vida and 100 Years of Cuban Photography. In 2003, Abascal published "Personal Documents", a monograph about his work. Some of his pieces are part of public and private collections in Cuba, France, Holland, Italy, Mexico and in important teaching institutions, galleries and museums in the United States.

He has had personal exhibitions in Cuba, the US and Switzerland and participated in many collective exhibits in Brazil, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Mali, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US. He was awarded Special Mention in the Casa de las Américas Photographic Essay Competition in 1996.
