From CubaPLUS Magazine Publisher

I am pleased to welcome you to issue 15 of Cubaplus our Business, which will inform about business in Cuba. This issue’s release opportunely coincides with the publication by the Cuban government of a decree that widens the legal framework for residential construction by foreign investors, sets out requirements for real estate development in some tourist areas of Cuba and grants leases on state land for up to 99 years. We provide more details on this interesting topic in our pages and intend to follow up in future issues.

There is also business anticipation that the Government will open more possibilities for the Cuban people to develop their own private businesses and create employment.

As part of our business features in this issue we have started a series of articles to be continued in subsequent issues presenting Canadian businessmen who have been very successful in Cuba. This issue features Cy Tokmakjian, CEO of the second largest Canadian company represented in Cuba.

Cubaplus 15 will also be at the The International Trade Fair of Havana, to be held from November 1st to the 6th, which will surely be a big hit and Business in Cuba anticipates the new opportunities.

There are also exciting plans to make the new world of Gaviota in the keys of Santa Maria an even more beautiful area enjoyable to all who visit it. I saw this wonderful place on my last visit.

And of course in our pages on fashion, art and music, we try to show what Cuba is all about, but it’s nothing like being here. You must come and see it for yourself. Meanwhile, enjoy as we present the real Cuba in our pages.

Cuba welcomed its two millionth visitor

Two millionth visitor this year arrives in Cuba

YESTERDAY, October 18, Cuba welcomed its two millionth visitor, a record attained 12 days earlier than 2009 and for the seventh consecutive year, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

Canada has the number one place as Cuba's main market consumer, as does the United Kingdom in Europe, followed by Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Mexico, Argentina and Russia. In relation to last year, the island has seen a 3% growth as a destination.

The Cuban Ministry of Tourism is currently involved in a process of product enhancement with renovation strategies for each one of its traditional, emerging and future markets. The essential proposal is to take maximum advantage of our natural attractions, and cultural and social achievements.

Having once again reached this important number of visitors in the run up to the 2010-2011winter season, we have ratified our commitment to promote a peaceful, healthy, safe and secure tourist experience for those who choose to come here.

Cuba's tourist development has been among the most important and dynamic in the Americas and the Caribbean for the past 20 years.

Alejandro Robaina. March 20, 1919 – April 17, 2010In a sad note I must offer my condolences to the Robaina Family for the great loss of Alejandro Robaina. He was a tremendous person with whom I shared time on many occasions and who certainly made an everlasting mark upon the Cuban tobacco industry. He will be missed by all who knew him.
